COURSE DESCRIPTION
This karate course introduces the student to beginning skills of stances, movements, blocking, punching and kicking.  
Eastern concepts of mind-body focus, power, fluidity of movement and self defense techniques are emphasized in
the study of Kata (forms). The course includes weapon kata.

Meditation underscores relaxation, stress management and the maintenance of health and vigor.  

This course shall include all aspects of karate-specific physical conditioning as well as instruction in the history
traditions, philosophy, etiquette and language of the martial arts.  Taoist, Confucian andBuddhist concepts shall
be surveyed for their psycho-physical applications in the martial arts.

MAIN GOAL
The main goal is for the student to learn the basic techniques and choreographic movements of kata and attain
proficiency sufficient to continue individual practice after course completion.

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The student will learn the fundamentals of karate to enable him/her to apply its psycho-physical principles toward
self defense, self-betterment and good health.

COURSE FORMAT
Student shall learn karate by repetitive practice of instructor’s progressive demonstrations.  
Lectures will be given at applicable stages of the course format.

REQUIREMENTS
Performance examination and essay topic shall be based on class instruction and lectures.  

EVALUATION METHOD
The final examination consists of solo performance of Kata; 50% of the final grade.  
Written Examinations;25%.  Essay;25%.  

After three (3) absences your final grade shall be lowered by one full grade per absence.
